Should the subject of death be discussed with children? Is there a good time and place to start?
Death is a subject that children need to talk about and unfortunately that need is not being met.
I believe that children aged about 3 to 5, cannot really understand the meaning of death, unless they have been frightened by a thoughtless adult. Some have lost a grandparent or favorite pet, and my guess is that at about aged 9 or 10 they are more aware, that death comes to us all. When this occurs, there are few adults they can talk to. As soon as they are present during a discussion of a lost friend or relative the conversation 'dries up'.
